Tours of the grounds begin at the Dr. John Harvey Kellogg Discovery Center, taking people through homes and buildings that represent life during the mid-1800s. For 83 years, the Kimball family served Battle Creek by providing medical services to the community. The family first moved to the town in 1886 and soon after built a 14-room house on Maple Street where three generations lived. Since 1966, the Kimball House has welcomed the public to tour it. Battle Creek's Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center is recognized by both the State of Michigan and the National Registry of Historic Places.
